How to make an email without Google (and without Gmail)

Adrian Maverick · · 9 min read

Gmail is so common that a lot of people assume an email address has to come from Google. It doesn't. Any email provider gives you a working address, and Google itself lets you use YouTube and Google Play with an address that isn't Gmail.

Can you make an email without Google?

Yes. To make an email without Google, sign up with any provider that isn't Google, such as Outlook, Yahoo Mail, iCloud Mail or Secria Mail. You get an address that doesn't end in @gmail.com and you never need a Google Account to use it. If you also want YouTube or Google Play, Google says you can create a Google Account with that non-Gmail address instead of opening Gmail.

Below are the providers, what each one asks for at sign-up as of October 24, 2026, and the Google steps for using your own address.

Email providers that aren't Google

Provider Address ending Run by Phone number at sign-up
Outlook.com @outlook.com or @hotmail.com Microsoft Not required. Verification can use "an email address or phone number"
Yahoo Mail @yahoo.com Yahoo Required. "A valid mobile number is needed"
AOL Mail @aol.com AOL Asked for, with the same "Add your phone number" step as Yahoo
iCloud Mail @icloud.com Apple Asked for. On the web, "a phone number that you can always access"
Secria Mail @secria.me Secria Never asked
Your own domain @yourname.com You, through a provider that supports it Depends on the provider

Sources: Microsoft's account creation and secure your account pages, Yahoo's required info page, AOL's live sign-up page, and Apple's Apple Account page.

A few things to weigh beyond the address ending:

  • Ads. Yahoo lists "an ad-free mailbox" among the benefits of its paid Yahoo Mail Plus plan.
  • Recovery. If a provider requires your phone number, that number becomes your way back in. Pick one you will keep.
  • Name changes. Yahoo says account names can't be changed, and Apple says you can't rename a primary iCloud address. Choose carefully.

How to make an email without Gmail, step by step

The steps are almost the same everywhere. Here is the short version for each. Our guide on how to create a new email account has the full walk-through for each provider.

Outlook or Hotmail. Go to outlook.com and select Create free account. Choose the name you want and pick outlook.com or hotmail.com, set a password, and enter your name, birth date and country. If you see "Help us secure your account," you can enter an email address you can open instead of a phone number. Microsoft says it "doesn't have to be your email or phone number."

Yahoo Mail. On Yahoo's sign-up page, enter your name, the address you want, a password and your date of birth, then verify a mobile number. Yahoo's sign-up help lists the mobile number as required. More in creating a Yahoo account without a phone number.

iCloud Mail. On an iPhone or iPad, create an Apple Account and tap Don't have an email address? when asked for one, to get a free iCloud address. If you already have an Apple Account, Apple's iCloud Mail guide says to go to Settings, your name, iCloud, then iCloud Mail, or select Create Email Address at icloud.com/mail.

Secria Mail. Go to the Secria sign-up page, enter a name, choose your @secria.me address and set a password, then save the 12-word recovery phrase. No phone number, no second email and no card.

How to make an email without "@gmail.com" at the end

If what bothers you is the ending, every provider in the table above solves it. Your address ends in that provider's name instead.

If you want an ending that is yours, use your own domain, like you@yourname.com. You buy the domain from a domain registrar, then connect it to an email provider that supports custom domains. The address stays yours if you ever change provider, since you move the domain rather than the mailbox name. Secria supports this on paid plans: Mail Plus includes 3 custom domains and Pro includes 10. Our page on custom domain email explains how it works.

Using YouTube, Google Play or Android without a Gmail address

This is the part most people actually need. You may want an email that isn't Gmail but still want YouTube, Drive or the Play Store. Google treats those as two separate things.

Google's Create a Google Account page says: "Your Gmail and Google Accounts are separate." And: "You don't need to have a Gmail address to create a Google Account. You can also use a non-Gmail email address to create one instead."

The steps, from the same page:

  1. Make your non-Google email address first, with any provider above.
  2. Go to the Google Account sign-in page and click Create account, then For my personal use.
  3. Enter your basic info.
  4. Click Use your existing email or phone number.
  5. Enter the email address you just made and click Next.
  6. Google sends a verification code to that address. Open your new inbox, copy the code and enter it.
  7. Follow the steps to create a password and finish.

You now have a Google Account that signs in with your own address and no Gmail inbox. Google's phone check can still appear here, because its verify your account page says phone verification is "sometimes" required for any new account.

One trap: in some countries Google also offers sign-up with only a phone number. Google says that account gets a username "in the format username@id.gle. This is not an email address." If you want to receive email, use the existing-email route instead.

Leaving Gmail you already have

If you already use Gmail and want a non-Google address going forward, don't delete the Google account on day one. Turn on forwarding so mail to the old address reaches the new one, then move your logins over time. Our step-by-step guide on how to switch from Gmail covers the export and the order of steps, and how to forward Gmail to another email covers forwarding.

Two Google rules are worth knowing while you overlap:

  • Gmail's "Send as" for other providers is ending. Some people plan to keep using the Gmail app and send from their new address through Gmail's "Send as" setting. Google's notice on third-party accounts says that starting January 2027, "You will no longer be able to send mail from third-party email accounts in Gmail on the web or in the Gmail mobile apps." Use your new provider's own app or website for sending instead.
  • Unused accounts can be deleted. Google's inactive account policy says it can delete an account "if you are inactive across Google for at least two years." Reading or sending an email counts as activity, so sign in now and then while forwarding is on.

If your reason for leaving is what Google can see in your mailbox, our breakdown of whether Gmail is private goes through it.

A non-Google email that keeps your mail private

Secria Mail is a free inbox at @secria.me with no phone number, no card and no ads. Every plan, free included, uses hybrid post-quantum encryption (ML-KEM-1024 with X25519), and your mailbox has zero-access storage: it is locked with a key made from your password, on your device. Secria never mines your mail, tracking pixels are removed automatically and senders never see your IP address.

The free plan has 1 GB of storage, 2 aliases and 3 folders. You can import your Gmail export, and it runs on the web, iPhone and Android. Mail Plus is $3.99 a month and Pro is $9.99 a month if you want more storage, more aliases or your own domain. See how it compares on our Gmail alternative page.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free email that isn't Google?

Yes. Outlook.com, Yahoo Mail, AOL Mail, iCloud Mail and Secria Mail all have free plans and none of them is run by Google. Of these, Outlook accepts an email address instead of a phone number for verification, and Secria never asks for a phone number at all.

Can I make a YouTube account without Gmail?

Yes. YouTube uses a Google Account, and Google says you can create a Google Account with "a non-Gmail email address." On the sign-up screen, choose Use your existing email or phone number and enter your other address.

Can I use an Android phone without a Gmail address?

Google says a Google Account is what gives you access to Google Play, and that a Google Account doesn't need a Gmail address. Create the Google Account with your non-Gmail email using the steps above, then sign in with it on the phone.

Is Outlook a Google product?

No. Outlook.com and Hotmail are run by Microsoft. iCloud Mail is Apple's, and Yahoo Mail is Yahoo's.

Can I remove Gmail from my Google Account and keep YouTube?

Yes. Google's page on removing Gmail from your Google Account says you can still use your account and services like Google Play purchases afterward, but "you need an alternate email address that isn't Gmail." Go to Manage your Google Account, then Data & privacy, then Remove data from services you no longer use, and click Delete next to Gmail. Google says it "deletes your emails and settings after 30 days" and that your Gmail address "can't be used by anyone in the future," so download your mail first.
