How to delete a Gmail account and keep your Google account

Adrian Maverick · · 8 min read

Deleting Gmail and deleting your Google account are two separate buttons, and Google keeps them a few clicks apart on purpose. You can remove the mailbox and the address and keep YouTube, Photos, Drive and everything you bought on Google Play.

How do you delete a Gmail account without deleting your Google account?

Open your Google Account, go to Data & privacy, and choose the option to delete a Google service. Select Delete next to Gmail, enter a non-Gmail email address, and click the verification link Google sends there. Gmail deletes your emails and settings after 30 days. The rest of your Google account stays.

First, which of these three do you want?

A lot of people searching for this want something smaller, and a few want something bigger.

What you want What to do What happens to your mail
Stop Gmail showing on one phone or computer Remove the account from that device Nothing. It is all still in Gmail
Get rid of the Gmail address and mailbox Delete the Gmail service (this guide) Deleted after 30 days
Leave Google entirely Delete the Google Account Deleted, along with Drive, Photos and purchases

Removing an account from a phone is done in the phone's own settings and deletes nothing at Google. Deleting the whole account is covered on Google's page about deleting your Google Account, which lists what goes with it: emails, files, calendars and photos, plus subscriptions and content bought on YouTube or Google Play.

The rest of this guide is the middle row.

What you keep and what you lose

Google's page on removing Gmail from your Google Account states the consequences plainly. As of October 2026:

  • Gmail deletes your emails and settings after 30 days.
  • You can no longer use the Gmail address to send or receive email.
  • Your Gmail address cannot be used by anyone in the future.
  • You can still use your Google Account and the services that are not affected. Google's examples are your activity across Google services and purchases from Google Play.

The third point is worth a second look. Once the address is gone, nobody else can register it, so a stranger cannot pick it up and start receiving your password resets. It also means you cannot hand it to a family member later.

Your Google Account needs a new sign-in name, which is why Google asks for an alternate email address that is not a Gmail address. That address becomes how you sign in to Drive, YouTube and the rest.

Before you delete: four things to do

Download your mail. Google tells you to download your data before removing Gmail. Use Google Takeout, deselect everything, and select only Mail. Google says most people get the link the same day, and the archive expires in about 7 days, so download it when the email arrives.

Move your logins. Every site where your Gmail address is the username needs the new address first. A password reset sent to a deleted mailbox goes nowhere. Our guide to switching from Gmail has three searches that find those accounts, and the order to change them in.

Check the recovery email on other accounts. Banks, Apple, Microsoft and many others store a backup address. It is often the Gmail one.

Have the alternate address ready and open. You will need to click a link in that inbox to finish. Use an address you control and expect to keep.

Delete Gmail on a computer

Google currently publishes two help pages for this, and they name the menu differently. Both end in the same place.

The route on Google's Gmail removal page:

  1. Go to Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click your profile picture, then Manage your Google Account.
  3. On the left, click Data & privacy.
  4. Scroll to the Tools section.
  5. Click Remove data from services you no longer use.
  6. Sign in again when asked.
  7. Next to "Gmail", click Delete.
  8. Enter an alternate email address and click Next.

The route on Google's account deletion page:

  1. Go to your Google Account and select Data & privacy.
  2. Scroll to "Data from apps and services you use".
  3. Select Delete a Google Service.
  4. Next to "Gmail", select Delete.
  5. Enter an existing email address you want to sign in with.
  6. Select Send verification email.

If neither label is where your screen says it should be, skip the menus. The button on both help pages goes to myaccount.google.com/deleteservices, which opens the list of services directly.

The step that actually deletes it

Nothing has happened yet. Google sends an email to the alternate address, and its page is explicit: until you verify that address, your Gmail address and emails are not removed.

So open the other inbox, find the message from Google, and click the link. If it is not there, check spam, and make sure you typed the address correctly. If you change your mind at this point, do nothing. An unclicked link leaves Gmail exactly as it was.

Delete Gmail on an iPhone or Android phone

The steps on Google's Android and iPhone tabs are the same as on a computer, starting from the app:

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. At the top right, tap your profile picture, then Manage your Google Account.
  3. Tap Data & privacy.
  4. Scroll to the Tools section.
  5. Tap Remove data from services you no longer use.
  6. Sign in, then tap Delete next to "Gmail".
  7. Enter an alternate email address and tap Next, then verify from that inbox.

Deleting the Gmail app, or removing the account under your phone's mail or account settings, is not this. Those only take Gmail off the device.

Can you get a deleted Gmail address back?

Often, yes. Several well-ranked guides say recovery is impossible. Google says otherwise: "Even if you remove your Gmail address, you can get it back." The steps are to open Gmail, sign in to your Google Account, and follow the prompts.

The catch is the mail. Google warns that if it has been a while since you removed the address, you might not be able to get your emails back, and the same page says emails and settings are deleted after 30 days. Treat 30 days as the window for your mail and the Takeout file as your real safety net.

If the address is the problem, you may not need to delete

Two lighter options do the same job for many people.

Change the address. Google now lets some accounts change a gmail.com address to a different gmail.com address. Its page on changing your Google Account email says the old address becomes an alternate, you receive mail at both, your data is untouched, and you cannot create another new gmail.com address for the next 12 months. To see whether your account has the option, go to myaccount.google.com/google-account-email.

Forward and leave it. Turn on automatic forwarding to your new inbox and keep the Gmail address as a quiet catch-all. Nothing bounces, and anyone you forgot to tell still reaches you. Sign in now and then, because Google's inactive account policy reserves the right to delete an account that has been inactive for two years.

If you are leaving because of what Google can see in a mailbox, our breakdown of whether Gmail is private covers what stays readable while the mail is stored there. A Takeout file imports into most services. Secria takes MBOX files on every plan, and they are read and encrypted in your browser before upload.
