How to delete your Discord account, and what happens next

Adrian Maverick · · 7 min read

To delete your Discord account, open User Settings, go to My Account, and select Delete Account at the bottom of the page. Discord puts the account in a "pending deletion" state for 15 days, and after that it is gone for good. If you own any servers, you have to hand them over or delete them first.

How to delete your Discord account on desktop or browser

These are the steps from Discord's own help article:

  1. Click the cogwheel icon in the bottom left corner to open User Settings.
  2. Make sure the My Account tab is selected in the left menu.
  3. At the bottom of the page, select Delete Account.
  4. If you own servers, Discord stops you here. Transfer ownership of each one, or delete it (see below).
  5. Go back to User Settings > My Account and select Delete Account again.
  6. Enter your password, and your authentication code if you have multi-factor authentication turned on.
  7. Press Delete Account.

You are logged out straight away.

How to delete your Discord account on mobile

  1. Tap your profile avatar in the bottom right corner.
  2. Tap your avatar again, or the gear icon in the upper right, to open Settings.
  3. Tap Account.
  4. Scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.
  5. If you own servers, transfer them first. Discord will not let you continue until you do.
  6. Go back to Account and tap Delete Account again.
  7. Enter your password and your authentication code if you use one.
  8. Tap Okay.

If you own a server, transfer it or delete it

This is the step that stops most people. Discord will not delete an account that still owns a server.

To transfer a server on desktop: open the server, go to the Members tab, right-click the person who should take over, and press Transfer Ownership. Flip the confirmation toggle and press Transfer Ownership again.

To transfer on mobile: open the server, tap Server Settings, then Members, tap the person, and select Transfer Ownership, then Transfer.

You stay in the server as a member with whatever role you are given. Discord says its Support team cannot transfer a server back, so pick the new owner carefully.

To delete a server instead: open Server Settings and choose Delete Server. You will be asked for the server's name or a 2FA code. A deleted server cannot be restored, members, messages and all.

Disable or delete: which one you want

Discord offers both, and they are close to opposites.

Disable Delete
Can you come back? Yes, log in and select Restore Account Only within 15 days
Notifications No @notifications None
Friend requests Stored for when you return None
Subscriptions Keep charging until you cancel them Nitro and Server Boosts are cancelled
Servers you own Must be transferred first Must be transferred or deleted first

To disable on desktop, go to User Settings > My Account and select Disable Account under Account Removal. Discord's disable article also warns that a disabled account inactive for two years or more may be deleted.

If you just want a break, disable. If you want out, delete.

What happens after you delete

From Discord's deletion and data retention pages:

  • You are logged out immediately, and the account sits in "pending deletion" for 15 days.
  • After 15 days the deletion is irreversible.
  • You lose access to your servers, direct messages, group messages and purchases.
  • Nitro and Server Boost subscriptions are cancelled.
  • Servers you owned carry on with the new owner you chose.
  • Your account is anonymized across all servers and messages.

That last point matters. Deleting your account does not delete your messages. Discord's page on how long it keeps your information says it continues to show the content you shared with other users, just no longer tied to your account. If you want specific messages gone, delete them yourself before you delete the account, or write to privacy@discord.com for help.

The same page says Discord keeps email addresses and phone numbers for 180 days after deletion for trust and safety purposes, and database backups for 30 to 45 days.

Download your data first

If you want a copy of your history, request it before you delete. Discord's data request article is clear that the request is canceled if you disable or delete your account before the download link arrives.

Desktop: cogwheel > Data & Privacy > under "Request your data," select Request Data, choose what you want, and submit.

Mobile: avatar > cogwheel > Data & Privacy > Request all of my data.

It can take up to 30 days. The link goes to the email on your account at the time of the request, and your email must be verified. So the order is: request data, wait for the email, download it, then delete.

How to cancel a Discord account deletion

Changed your mind within the 15 days? Log in on the desktop app, browser or mobile app. Discord tells you the account is pending deletion. Select Restore Account and you are back in. Logging in and restoring cancels the deletion.

If you forgot the password, reset it first. If you asked Support to delete the account, follow up with Support to cancel. After 15 days, there is nothing to restore.

If you can't log in

Discord's steps need your password, so start with a password reset if you still have the email inbox. If you cannot start the deletion inside the app, or you think the account has been compromised, Discord says to contact its Support Team. Our guide to changing your email on Discord covers what Discord can and cannot do when you have lost access to the inbox.

An account nobody logs in to is also scheduled for deletion after two years of inactivity, with a warning sent to the email or phone number on it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to delete a Discord account?

15 days. Discord says deletions take 15 days to process and its Support Team is unable to speed it up. Many searches mention 14 days, but Discord's current article says 15.

Can I delete my Discord account instantly?

No. Every deletion goes through the 15-day pending period, so you can still change your mind. Discord does not offer a way around it.

Does deleting Discord delete all my messages?

No. Your messages stay visible to the people who received them, with your account anonymized. Delete specific messages yourself before deleting the account if you want them gone.

Why can't I delete my Discord account?

Usually because you still own a server. Transfer ownership or delete each server you own, then go back to Delete Account. If you are stuck for another reason, contact Discord Support.

Will deleting my account cancel Nitro?

Yes, Discord says Nitro and Server Boost subscriptions are cancelled when you delete. Disabling does not cancel them, so cancel subscriptions yourself if you only disable.

Can I delete a Discord account without logging in?

Not through the app, since the steps require your password. Reset the password first, or contact Discord Support if you cannot get in or think someone else has the account.

Clean up the address too

Deleting the account is one part. The email you used is still on file elsewhere, and our guide to what happens when you delete your email account and the checklist for changing your email address everywhere help with the rest. If you ever come back, Discord without a phone number covers sign-up.

If you are cleaning up your accounts, a separate address for sign-ups helps next time. Secria Mail sign-up is a name, the address you want and a password, with no phone number and no card. The free plan includes 2 aliases, so each service can get its own, and if one leaks you can trace it and stop it by deleting the alias. Create a free account if that fits.
