How to change your email on Discord, and undo it
You change your Discord email from User Settings, under My Account on desktop or Account on mobile. The catch is in Discord's own help page: you need access to the inbox of your current address, and Discord's Support team cannot make the change for you. Plan around that and the rest is quick.
How do you change your email on Discord?
Open User Settings (the cogwheel), go to My Account on desktop or Account on mobile, and choose Edit or tap your current email. Follow the pop-up, which needs access to your current inbox, then open the verification email Discord sends to the new address.
Those steps come from Discord's article on changing your account's email, checked on November 4, 2026. Here they are in full, followed by the parts Discord spreads over four other help articles.
Before you change it
- Make sure you can open your current inbox. This is the step that stops most people. Discord says Support cannot change the address on your account, so the old inbox is the only way through.
- Make sure the new address receives mail. Discord sends a verification email there. If you use a filter or a strict spam setting, Discord's verification email page suggests allowlisting notifications@discord.com, support@discord.com and noreply@discord.com.
- Check that the new address is not on another Discord account. Discord allows one email per account. An old alt account using that address will block the change.
- Find your backup codes if you use two-factor authentication. Discord's MFA article says Support cannot remove MFA from an account, so this is a good moment to confirm you still have them.
- Do it once. Changing again too soon gets an error and a 24-hour wait, covered below.
Steps on desktop and in a browser
- Click the cogwheel next to your Discord username to open User Settings.
- Make sure you are on the My Account tab.
- Click Edit next to your current email address.
- Follow the instructions in the pop-up, then click Done.
- Open the inbox of the new address and complete the verification email.
Steps on iPhone and Android
- Tap your avatar in the bottom right corner of the app.
- Tap the cogwheel in the top right corner.
- Tap Account.
- Tap your current email address.
- Follow the on-screen instructions, then tap Change Email.
- Check the new inbox for Discord's verification email.
If the verification email never arrives, open My Account again. Discord shows a Resend Verification Email banner at the top on desktop and a Verify banner on mobile. Discord adds that Support cannot send verification emails by hand.
What happens to your old email address
Once the change is confirmed, Discord sends one more message, this time to the original address. Discord's article on undoing an email change explains it: the email contains a Start Account Recovery button that lets you reverse the change within 48 hours.
If you made the change yourself, you can ignore it. If you did not, that button is the fastest way back in. Two things to know about it:
- The real link always starts with https://discord.com/wasntme/. Discord says anything else is fake. A message about an email change is an obvious lure for phishing, so check the address before you click.
- It is a full reset, not just an undo. Using it changes the email back, logs the account out of every device, makes you set a new password, removes any phone number and removes every MFA method. Using one link also cancels any recovery links created after it.
After a recovery, add your phone number and MFA back yourself. Discord does not restore them.
Discord's article on hacked accounts gives the same advice in shorter form: if you think someone got in, check your email first for the "Discord Email Address changed" message.
Why the undo link can fail
Discord lists four reasons you can get an error, and they only show up at the password step:
| Error cause | What to do |
|---|---|
| More than 48 hours have passed | Nothing through this link. Support cannot send a new one. |
| An earlier recovery link was already used | The earlier one won. Check whether you are already back in. |
| The original address is now on another Discord account | Remove it from that other account first, then retry. |
| The new password is rejected | Use at least 8 characters. Some regions have extra rules. |
Error messages when changing your email
Discord's login and email troubleshooting guide covers the messages you may see while changing the address:
- Invalid Email. Discord suggests waiting 24 hours before trying the same address again. If it still fails and you have no other address to try, contact Support.
- Email is already registered. The address is already tied to a Discord account. Use a different one, or contact Support if you are sure no account uses it.
- You are changing your e-mail too fast. Try again later. Wait 24 hours, then try again.
- Email does not exist. This one shows up at login, not during a change. It means no account uses the address you typed.
How to change your email on Discord without access to your old email
You cannot, by Discord's own rules. The change email article and the troubleshooting guide both say Support is not able to change the address on your account. The only route Discord suggests is to contact your email provider and see whether you can get temporary access to the old inbox.
What helps depends on why you lost it:
- You forgot the password to the old inbox. Recover that email account first, through its own provider. Then change the address on Discord.
- It was a work or school address. Ask the administrator whether the mailbox can be reopened briefly. That is the "temporary access" Discord means.
- You never had it, because you typed it wrong at sign-up. Discord's sign-up guide is blunt about this: double-check the spelling, "otherwise, you won't be able to change it after registration."
Can you change your Discord email with your phone number?
A verified phone number lets you sign in. Discord's login article says you can log in with your email or a phone number that has been verified on the account. Discord's troubleshooting guide also suggests signing in by phone to see which email the account uses, under My Account.
What a phone number does not do is replace the old inbox for the change itself. Discord's change email article still says you need access to your current email address.
Forgot which email your Discord account uses?
Support will not tell you. Discord's troubleshooting guide gives four things to try:
- Check any device or browser where you are still logged in, under User Settings > My Account.
- On the login page, type an address you think it might be and select Forgot your Password. If an account uses that address, a reset email arrives.
- Search all your inboxes for mail from Discord. Discord's notice about its emails says official account mail can also come from the @m.discord.com domain.
- If a phone number is verified on the account, sign in with it and look under My Account.
After the change
Discord now sends password resets, verification emails and account notices to the new address. Other places that know you by the old one will not update on their own. Our checklist on changing your email address everywhere covers the order to work through the rest, and how to tell people your email address changed has short templates. If you want to take your phone number off Discord as well, our guide to Discord without a phone number has the steps.
If you need a new address anyway
If you are moving to a new address for Discord, it can be one that asks for no phone number. Signing up for Secria Mail takes a name, the address you want and a password, with no phone number and no card. The free plan comes with 1 GB and 2 email aliases. Give Discord its own alias: if that address ever starts getting spam or phishing, you know where it came from, and you can switch it off by deleting the alias. Old mail can be imported from Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail and others. Create a free account if that fits.
Frequently asked questions
Can Discord Support change my email for me? No. Discord's help articles say Support cannot change the email address on an account. You need access to the current inbox to do it from User Settings.
How long do I have to undo a Discord email change? 48 hours from when Discord sends the notice to your original address. After that the link stops working and Support cannot issue a new one.
Can I use the same email on two Discord accounts? No. Discord allows one email address per account, which is why you see "Email is already registered" when the address is taken.
Why does Discord say I'm changing my email too fast? You changed or tried to verify the address too often in a short time. Discord says to wait 24 hours and try again, and to contact Support if the error continues after that.
Does changing my email log me out of Discord? Discord's change email article does not say it does. The undo link is different: using it logs the account out of every device and makes you set a new password.
Change it while the old inbox still works, and keep that inbox for at least the 48 hours the undo link is live.
