Create a Discord account without a phone number in 2026
Yes. Discord's own sign-up guide asks for an email, a username, a password and a date of birth on desktop and in the browser. No phone number is needed to create the account. The phone question comes later, and only in specific cases, which Discord lists in its help center.
Short answer: you can create a Discord account with only an email address. Sign up at discord.com or in the desktop app, verify the email, and you are in. Discord may later ask you to verify a mobile number, either because a server you join requires it or because its safety systems flag your activity.
Everything below comes from Discord's Help Center as of November 1, 2026.
What Discord asks for at sign-up
Discord's sign-up and registration guide describes slightly different screens depending on where you sign up.
| Where you sign up | What Discord asks for | Phone needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Browser (discord.com) | Email, username, password, date of birth, then a CAPTCHA "if prompted" | No |
| Desktop app (Windows, Mac, Linux) | Same as the browser | No |
| iPhone and Android app | "Your phone number or email address," then display name, username, password and date of birth | No, choose email |
On a phone, the first field accepts either, so it is easy to type a number out of habit. If you want an email-only account, type the email there.
Two details from the guide are worth knowing before you start. Check the spelling of your email, because Discord says if it is wrong "you won't be able to change it after registration." And one email address can only be used with one Discord account at a time.
How to create a Discord account with just an email
- Open discord.com/login in a browser, or open the Discord app. Select Register.
- Enter your email address. On mobile, type it into the "phone or email" field instead of a number.
- Choose a username and set a password. On mobile you also pick a display name, which is the name other people see.
- Enter your real date of birth. Discord uses it to apply its age rules, and a wrong one can lock you out later.
- Complete the CAPTCHA if one appears.
- Open the verification email from Discord and confirm your address. Discord's mobile guide says verifying it is what lets you "recover your account if you ever forget your password." It also unlocks servers that ask for a verified email.
If the email doesn't show up, Discord's page on resending the verification email says to allowlist notifications@discord.com, support@discord.com and noreply@discord.com, then use the "Resend Verification Email" banner in User Settings > My Account. Discord adds that its support team can't send the email for you.
When Discord asks for a phone number later
Discord's article on verifying your account says you "may be required to verify your email and phone number as part of our safety system." It gives the reasons it may show a "Verification Required" message. You might have:
- joined a server that requires its members to have verified accounts
- "joined multiple servers in a short period of time"
- "direct messaged multiple users who are not your friends"
- "sent messages or posted content to communities faster than a human can manage"
- "used third party clients or modifications to Discord"
So there are two very different sources of the phone prompt, and it helps to know which one you hit.
A server asked, not Discord
Every server owner picks a verification level. Discord's page on verification levels sets them out:
| Server level | What you need to chat there |
|---|---|
| None | Nothing |
| Low | A verified email |
| Medium | A verified email, verified for more than five minutes |
| High | The above, plus registered for more than 5 minutes and a member of the server for more than 10 minutes |
| Highest | All of the above plus a verified phone number |
Only the Highest level needs a phone. If one server won't let you talk but others will, that server is set to Highest. Your choices are to add a number or to skip that server. Discord also notes that a verified phone "supersedes all other requirements," which is why a number skips the waiting times.
Discord's own safety systems asked
If the prompt appears across Discord, not just in one server, it came from the account checks above. Discord does not publish an email-only way around it. Its verification page says "we may require you to verify your account using a valid phone number," and the steps that follow are a mobile number and an SMS code. Giving the account time, joining servers at a normal pace and not using modified clients are the behaviors Discord's list implies, but it doesn't promise the prompt goes away.
Which phone numbers Discord rejects
If you do decide to add a number, Discord's help pages explain the usual errors:
- VOIP, burner and landline numbers. Discord's verification page says plainly: "VOIP, Burner, or Landline numbers cannot be used." Its phone errors page adds that the number must be "associated with a mobile device."
- A number already on another account. "A phone can only be registered with one Discord account at a time." The error reads "This phone number is unable to be associated with this account."
- A number used recently. Discord calls this a timeout and says to "wait 24-48 hrs" before trying again.
The "receive SMS online" sites some guides recommend fall into the first group, and their numbers are public anyway, so anyone can read the code. Don't put one on an account you care about.
Why Discord asks for a number at all
In Discord's words, "requiring that you verify your email address or phone number helps prove you are not a robot and helps keep spammers out." A mobile number costs more to get than an email address, so it slows down people who make accounts in bulk.
Discord says it "uses your phone number for safety and security purposes," and that it also powers opt-in features like Find Your Friends, which matches your phone contacts to Discord accounts. Once a number is verified, you can also use it to log in instead of your email.
How to remove your phone number from Discord
Discord's page on removing a phone number gives these steps:
- Desktop or browser: select the cogwheel next to your username, go to My Account, press Remove next to the phone number and enter your password.
- Mobile: tap your avatar, tap the cogwheel, then Account, then the Phone field, then Remove Phone Number.
Discord says there is "a waiting period before the number can be used on an account again." Removing it also means any server set to Highest will ask again.
If you made a phone-only account by mistake
On mobile it is possible to register with your number instead of an email. Discord's fix: log in to that account with the phone number, reset the password by SMS, add an email address in User Settings, confirm it, and then remove the number. The account is then email-based like any other.
Securing a Discord account without SMS
You don't need a phone number for two-factor authentication either. Discord's multi-factor authentication guide supports passkeys and security keys, an authenticator app, and SMS. It recommends a security key and says of SMS: "we don't recommend it." SMS can only be turned on after an authenticator app anyway.
Save your backup codes when you enable it. Discord says its support team "is not able to remove MFA from an account," so the codes are your way back in if you lose your device. And keep the email address on the account working: with no phone attached, it is how you reset your password.
Start with an email that needs no phone either
The email you give Discord ends up being your account's recovery route, so it is worth choosing it on purpose. Gmail and Outlook can ask for a phone during their own sign-up; we cover what each does in creating a Gmail without a phone number and creating an Outlook account without a phone number, and our email without a phone number page compares the big providers.
Secria Mail's sign-up is a name, the address you want and a password, with no phone number and no card. You save a 12-word recovery phrase at sign-up, so getting back in doesn't depend on a number either. The free plan has 1 GB and 2 email aliases, so you can give Discord an alias instead of your main address and keep that one private. You can create a free account here.
FAQ
Can I create a Discord account without a phone number? Yes. On desktop and in the browser, Discord's sign-up asks for an email, username, password and date of birth, with no phone field. On mobile, type an email into the "phone or email" field.
Can I verify my Discord account without a phone number? Email verification, yes: Discord sends a link to your address. Phone verification is separate. If a server is set to Highest, or Discord's safety systems flag your account, Discord's documented route is a mobile number and an SMS code.
Why does one Discord server want my phone number? Its owner set the verification level to Highest, the only level that requires a verified phone. Servers at None, Low, Medium or High only need a verified email and, at most, a few minutes of waiting.
Can I use a Google Voice or other internet number for Discord? No. Discord says "VOIP, Burner, or Landline numbers cannot be used," and that the number has to belong to a mobile device.
Can I remove my phone number from Discord after verifying? Yes. Go to User Settings, then My Account, and press Remove next to the number. Discord asks for your password, and the number can't be reused on an account for a while afterwards.
