How to delete a Yahoo account: steps, waits, what you lose

Adrian Maverick · · 7 min read

Closing a Yahoo account takes three clicks. Getting it to stay closed, without losing mail you wanted or leaving a door open to your other accounts, takes a bit of planning in the right order.

How do you delete a Yahoo account?

Sign in to Yahoo's account termination page, read the information about closing your account, and follow the on-screen instructions to confirm. Yahoo then deactivates the account and deletes it after a waiting period, 30 days in most countries. Signing in during that time reactivates it.

Those steps come from Yahoo's help page Close or reactivate your Yahoo account, checked in October 2026. The termination page it links to is yahoo.mydashboard.oath.com/delete-my-account.

What do you lose when you delete a Yahoo account?

The whole account, not just the mailbox. Yahoo lists what goes:

  • Yahoo Mail messages and folders
  • Yahoo Calendar
  • Yahoo Finance portfolios
  • Yahoo Fantasy teams

There is no option to delete Yahoo Mail and keep the rest. One account, one switch.

Can someone else get your old Yahoo address?

Yes, and this is the part most guides leave out or hedge. Yahoo's Terms of Service say that if your account is terminated, "your username may be recycled for use by others."

Think about what that means in practice. Any site where your Yahoo address is still the login or the recovery email will send its password reset to that address. If a stranger registers it next year, the reset goes to them. Yahoo does not say how long it waits before releasing a name, so plan as if it could happen.

The fix is to move every account off the address before you close it, not after. That step is in the list below, and it is the one that takes the longest.

The order to do it in

The order matters because one of these has a 30-day lead time and another has a 90-day one.

1. Request your data first

Yahoo's page on managing your account data says a data download can take up to 30 days to become available, and stays available for 30 days after that. Request it today, even if you plan to close the account next month. It arrives as JSON and covers information about your account.

For the mail itself, Yahoo offers a separate route: its IMAP download page explains how to pull every message into a desktop mail app using the server export.imap.mail.yahoo.com. Large accounts can take several days. If you want your old mail in a new inbox, the file you export from that app is what you import. Secria takes MBOX, EML and .pst files on every plan, including the free one.

2. Cancel subscriptions and check the 90-day rule

Yahoo will only let you close the account when two things are true:

  • Any outstanding balance has been paid.
  • It has been at least 90 days since the end of the paid term for your last cancelled subscription.

Read the second one carefully. If you pay for Yahoo Mail Plus or another Yahoo service, cancelling today does not let you delete today. The clock starts when the paid term ends, and runs for 90 days from there. Cancel now, on the Subscriptions page of your account, and put the earliest closing date in your calendar.

3. Move your logins off the address

Go through every account that uses the Yahoo address and change it. Start with the ones that can do damage: bank, payment apps, your Apple, Google or Microsoft account, your password manager, then shops that hold a card.

Three ways to find them: search your Yahoo inbox for words like "welcome", "verify" and "receipt", search your password manager for the address, and check the recovery email setting on your important accounts. If you would rather not hand one address to every shop again, give each of them an email alias so a leak at one cannot reach the rest.

4. Tell people, and watch for stragglers

Yahoo's free plan has no automatic forwarding, so you cannot simply redirect mail to the new address. Send a short note to the people who matter, and keep checking the Yahoo inbox for a few weeks. Each message that still arrives there is a sender to update.

5. Take the account off your devices

Yahoo reactivates the account if you sign in during the waiting period. To be safe, remove the Yahoo account from your phone's mail app, from any desktop mail app, and from browsers that sign you in automatically. Yahoo does not say whether an app checking mail in the background counts as signing in, so this is a precaution, and a cheap one.

While you are there, delete any app passwords under "External connections" on the Account Security page. Yahoo notes that they stay active until deleted.

6. Close the account

  1. Sign in to the Yahoo account termination page.
  2. Read the information about closing your account.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

That is the entire procedure as Yahoo publishes it.

How long until a Yahoo account is permanently deleted?

Yahoo sets the wait by the country the account is registered in.

Account registered in You can reactivate within
Most countries and regions 30 days
Australia or New Zealand 90 days
Brazil, Hong Kong, India or Taiwan 180 days

To reactivate, sign in within that time. Yahoo then asks you to verify your recovery information and create a new password. After the window, the account and its mail are gone.

Can you delete a Yahoo account on a phone?

Yes, in a browser. The termination page is a web page, so it works in Safari or Chrome on a phone the same way it does on a computer. Yahoo's instructions do not describe a delete option inside the Yahoo Mail app. Removing the Yahoo account from your iPhone or Android mail settings only disconnects the phone. The account stays open.

Should you delete a hacked Yahoo account?

Secure it first. Deleting a compromised account while someone else still has access leaves them holding it through the whole reactivation window, and they only need to sign in once to bring it back.

Yahoo's page on recognizing a hacked account gives the order: change your password immediately, delete app passwords you do not recognize, check that your recovery options are yours, and revert any mail settings that were changed. It lists filters, the reply-to address and the auto-forwarding address as common things for an intruder to alter. Once the account is yours alone, close it with the steps above.

Frequently asked questions

Can I delete my Yahoo email but keep my Yahoo account? No. Yahoo closes the account as a whole, and its list of what you lose includes Mail, Calendar, Finance portfolios and Fantasy teams together.

Can I recover a Yahoo account after deleting it? Yes, within the window for your country: 30 days in most places, 90 in Australia and New Zealand, 180 in Brazil, Hong Kong, India and Taiwan. Sign in, verify your recovery information and set a new password.

Why won't Yahoo let me close my account? The usual reason is a subscription. Yahoo requires any balance to be paid and at least 90 days to have passed since the paid term of your last cancelled subscription ended.

Can I delete a Yahoo account without signing in? No. You have to sign in to the termination page. If you cannot sign in, recover the account first with Yahoo's sign-in help, then close it.

Will people who email my old Yahoo address get a bounce? Yahoo does not document what senders see. Assume mail to a closed address is lost, and tell your contacts before you close.

A closed account is one fewer place for old mail and old passwords to leak from. If you are choosing where your next address lives, the Yahoo Mail alternative page shows how Secria compares, and our post on keeping a separate email for banking is a good habit to start with a new inbox.
