How to delete an AOL account: steps, waits, what you lose
Closing an AOL account takes five short steps. Most of the work is what comes before them: AOL will refuse the request if you still pay for anything, owe anything, or have extra usernames open.
How do you delete an AOL account?
Sign in to AOL's account termination page, read the information, confirm the username you want to close, enter your password again, and confirm. Before AOL accepts it, your balance must be zero and it must be at least 90 days since you cancelled any paid plan. After that, you have 30 days in most countries to change your mind.
Those steps come from AOL's help article Close your account, updated October 14, 2026 and checked in October 2026. The termination page it links to is aol.mydashboard.oath.com/delete-my-account.
What do you lose when you delete an AOL account?
AOL says closing deletes "more than your emails." You lose access to all of your data and content, including emails and email folders. AOL calls out two consequences in particular:
- The address is gone for good. AOL's words: "You can't use it again, and neither can anyone else."
- Anything that relies on it breaks. That includes sign-ins and password resets on other sites, email forwarding, and anything that emails you at that address.
The second point is the one to plan around. Every site that sends a password reset to your AOL address loses the ability to reach you the day the account goes.
Cancelling a paid plan is not closing the account
People often mean one of two things when they say "cancel AOL." AOL treats them separately.
| You want to | Where | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Stop paying for AOL | MySubscriptions page | You move to the free AOL plan and keep your AOL Mail |
| Get rid of the account | Account termination page | The account, its mail and the address are deleted after the recovery window |
AOL's cancel or reactivate article says cancelling a paid plan and moving to the free plan "gives you continued access to your AOL email." If you cancel mid-cycle, you keep the paid service until the end of the billing cycle, and any premium subscriptions you have are billed separately, so check each one.
If your goal is to leave, you need both, in that order: cancel the plans, then close the account at least 90 days later.
The order to do it in
1. Request your data first
AOL's article on managing your account data says a download request can take up to 30 days to finish. Start it today.
- Sign in to the Privacy Dashboard at preferences.aol.com.
- In "Manage Your Information," go down to "Download and view your data."
- Click Download My Data, select some or all products, and click Next.
- Enter the email address where you want to be told it is ready, then click Request Download.
The file arrives as JSON. AOL says it contains all personally identifiable data about you and your account.
2. Download the mail itself
For your actual messages, AOL's IMAP download page explains how to pull everything into a desktop mail app such as Thunderbird, Outlook or Mac Mail. Use the incoming server export.imap.aol.com on port 993 with SSL, and sign in with your full address. Older apps may need an app password.
AOL's own warnings for this step:
- If the app asks whether to "keep mail on the server," choose yes, or your email will be deleted from your account as it downloads.
- Set the app to download full messages, not just previews.
- Large accounts can take several days or longer.
- Folders with a million or more messages may not download fully. Move some mail into a new folder first.
3. Cancel paid plans and start the 90-day clock
Go to mysubscriptions.aol.com, click Manage next to each plan, click Cancel my subscription, then Continue and Cancel now. Pay off any balance on the same page.
AOL will not close the account until 90 days after you cancel. Put that date in your calendar. If you skip this step and go straight to the termination page, this is usually why it refuses.
4. Move your logins off the address
Change the email on every account that uses your AOL address, starting with the ones that can do damage: bank, payment apps, your Apple, Google or Microsoft account, your password manager, then any shop that stores a card. Our guide on how to change your email address everywhere has a method for finding them all. You have at least 90 days of waiting to get this done, which is plenty.
5. Close extra usernames first
One AOL account can hold more than one username, and closing one does not close the others. AOL's rules:
- Close each username one at a time.
- Close all the additional usernames first.
- Then wait 30 days before closing the primary username.
- Each username needs its own payment method. If two share one card and only one has a second card, close the one without a second card first, or add a different payment method to it.
6. Take the account off your devices
AOL reactivates a closed account if you sign in during the recovery window. Remove the AOL account from your phone's mail app, any desktop mail app, and browsers that sign you in automatically. AOL does not say whether a background mail check counts as signing in, so treat this as a precaution.
While you are there, delete your app passwords on the AOL Account Security page. AOL's app password article says they "remain active, even if you change your main account password," until you delete them.
7. Close the account
- Sign in to the account termination page.
- Read the information about closing your account.
- Confirm the username you want to close.
- Enter your password again.
- Confirm that you want to close your account.
Why won't AOL let me close my account?
AOL lists four causes:
- You owe a balance. Pay it on your MyAccount page and try again.
- A paid plan has not cleared the 90 days. The 90 days start when you cancel, not before.
- The account has more than one username. Close the others first, then the primary 30 days later.
- Two usernames share a payment method. Add a different one to the username that has none, or close that username first.
If none of these fits, AOL points to its paid premium support line at 1-800-358-4860.
How long until an AOL account is permanently deleted?
The recovery window depends on where you registered the account.
| Account registered in | You can get it back within |
|---|---|
| Most countries | 30 days |
| Australia, India or New Zealand | 90 days |
| Brazil, Hong Kong or Taiwan | 180 days |
To reactivate, sign in to your AOL account and check your recovery information. After the window, AOL says "your account and its data are gone for good."
Will AOL delete an account I just stop using?
It can. AOL's page on reasons it deletes accounts lists three: you asked for it, you didn't sign in for 24 months, or the account broke AOL's Terms of Service. If it was deleted, your old username won't be available again.
Letting an account lapse is not a substitute for closing it, though. You do not control the timing, and you skip the step where you save your mail.
Should you delete a hacked AOL account?
Secure it first. If someone else can still sign in, they can reactivate the account during the recovery window. AOL's page on recognizing a hacked account gives the order: change your password immediately, delete app passwords you don't recognize, revert any mail settings that were changed, make sure your recovery options are up to date, and consider turning on two-step verification. Then close it with the steps above.
Frequently asked questions
Can I delete my AOL email but keep paying for AOL services? Not with the same account. Closing the account deletes your mail, and AOL will not close it while you still have a paid plan that hasn't cleared the 90-day wait.
Can I delete an AOL account on my phone? AOL's steps run in a browser, through its termination web page. Removing the AOL account from your phone's mail settings only disconnects the phone. The account stays open.
Can someone else take my old AOL address? AOL says no. Its help page states that once the account is closed, the address can't be used again, "and neither can anyone else."
Can I delete my AOL account without signing in? No. The first step is signing in to the termination page. If you can't sign in, recover the account first.
Does cancelling a paid AOL plan delete my email? No. AOL says cancelling a paid plan moves you to the free plan and keeps your AOL email.
Starting fresh
If you are closing AOL to start over somewhere else, set up the new inbox before you start moving logins. Secria Mail is free, and signing up asks only for a name, the address you want and a password, with no phone number and no card. Every plan, free included, uses hybrid post-quantum encryption (ML-KEM-1024 with X25519), and your mailbox sits in zero-access storage, locked with a key made from your password, on your device. There are no ads, tracking pixels are removed automatically and senders never see your IP address. You can import your old mail. Create a free account, and if you are still deciding whether to stay, our review of whether AOL Mail is safe covers the other side.
