How to change your email on LinkedIn, web and app

Adrian Maverick · · 10 min read

LinkedIn has no single "change email" box. You add the new address, confirm it, make it your primary address and then remove the old one, all from the same settings page. It is quick as long as you can still get into your current inbox.

How do you change your email on LinkedIn?

Go to Me > Settings & Privacy > Sign in & security > Email addresses, select Add email address, enter the new address and your LinkedIn password, and click the link LinkedIn sends to it. Then select Make primary next to the new address and Remove next to the old one.

That is the whole process in one paragraph. The details below are from LinkedIn's help page on managing your email address, checked on November 4, 2026, plus what its other help pages say about the cases where it goes wrong.

Before you change it

A few minutes of checking saves you from locking yourself out:

  • Make sure the new address receives mail. LinkedIn will not let it become primary until you click the link it sends there. Send yourself a test message first.
  • Keep the old inbox open until you are done. LinkedIn may send a code to your current primary address before it accepts the change.
  • Know your LinkedIn password. The add step asks for it.
  • Check your recovery options. LinkedIn's no access to email page suggests a second email address or a phone number on the account as a way back in. If the old address is a work address you are about to lose, add the personal one now, not after your last day.
  • Have your phone nearby. If you use LinkedIn's app, it may ask you to approve the change there.

Steps on desktop

  1. Click the Me icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage.
  2. Click Settings & Privacy.
  3. Click Sign in & security in the left pane, then Email addresses under Account access.
  4. Click Add email address. LinkedIn says you may be asked for a verification code sent to your primary email address, or to approve the change in the LinkedIn app.
  5. Type the new address and your LinkedIn password, then click Submit.
  6. Open the new inbox and follow the link in LinkedIn's email to confirm the address.
  7. Back on the Email addresses page, click Make primary next to the new address.
  8. Click Remove next to the old address if you no longer want it on the account.

Steps in the LinkedIn app

  1. Tap your profile photo, then Settings & Privacy.
  2. Tap Sign in & security, then Email addresses under Account access.
  3. Tap Add email address and complete any code or app approval prompt.
  4. Enter the new address, then your LinkedIn password, and tap Submit.
  5. Confirm the address from the email LinkedIn sends.
  6. Tap Make primary below the new address.
  7. To remove the old one, tap Remove. LinkedIn's removal page shows this as an X next to the address on iOS and Android.

On a phone browser rather than the app, the path is the same except the menu is called Settings instead of Settings & Privacy.

The four states an address can be in

LinkedIn treats every address on your account as one of these. Knowing which one yours is in explains most error messages.

State What it can do What it cannot do
Added, not confirmed Nothing yet Become primary, receive password reset links
Confirmed, additional Sign in, receive password reset links Receive your notifications (unless the primary has problems)
Primary Sign in, notifications, password resets, sending invitations Be removed while it is the primary
Bounced Nothing until fixed Receive mail from LinkedIn

Two lines in LinkedIn's help explain the table. The manage page says "your primary email address can only be replaced with a verified email address", and the second email page says LinkedIn "can only send a password reset link to confirmed email addresses on your account."

What the new address is used for

Once it is primary, the new address does four jobs:

  • Sign in. You can sign in with the primary address or any confirmed additional address.
  • Notifications. LinkedIn sends notifications to the primary address. If it detects a problem with that address, it switches to an additional one, based on your notification settings.
  • Password resets. Reset links go only to confirmed addresses.
  • Invitations. The removal page notes that a primary address is mandatory to send invitations.

Confirmation itself matters too. LinkedIn's verification page says a confirmed address is what lets you send messages and apply for jobs.

Why can't you remove your old email on LinkedIn?

Because it is still the primary address. LinkedIn only shows the Remove option once a different, confirmed address is primary. Make the new one primary first, reload the page, and Remove appears next to the old one. You may be asked for your password, a code sent to your email or an approval in the app at this point too.

You do not have to remove the old address at all. LinkedIn recommends keeping at least one personal and one work address on the account so you can always get in. The practical rule: remove an address only when you are about to lose access to it, and only after the address that replaces it is confirmed.

How to change your email on LinkedIn without a verification code

If LinkedIn wants a code sent to an inbox you can no longer open, you cannot complete the add step from settings. Use the recovery flow instead, from LinkedIn's no access page:

  1. On the sign-in screen, select Forgot password.
  2. Enter the email address or phone number on your account and click Next.
  3. When asked for the code sent to your email, click Can't access this email?
  4. If the account has other addresses or a phone number, LinkedIn may offer to send the code there. If you have none of them, click Don't have access to any of these?
  5. On a desktop, scan the QR code shown on screen with your phone.
  6. Enter the new email address you want on the account. A link to your profile is optional.
  7. Upload a photo of a valid government-issued ID when asked.

LinkedIn's identity verification page says this check runs through Persona, its identity verification provider, needs a smartphone to photograph the ID, and may ask for a photo of your face. LinkedIn says the data is generally deleted within 14 days of submission. If you are in Canada, the EU or the UK and do not want to send an ID photo, you can instead print an Affidavit of Identity, sign it in front of a notary public, and attach the scan to your support case.

This is the main reason to keep a second address or phone on the account. With one, step 4 ends the problem.

Gotchas LinkedIn's help pages document

You joined with Google or Apple. LinkedIn's Google sign-in page says that when you sign in with Google, "you will not have a separate password." The add email step asks for your LinkedIn password. LinkedIn Help does not explain how those two fit together, so if you hit a password prompt for a password you never set, contact LinkedIn support rather than guessing. Also note that Apple sign-up only works in the iOS app, according to LinkedIn's Apple sign-in page.

"Email address is already registered." LinkedIn's already registered page lists the usual reasons: you clicked Join now instead of Sign in, you accepted an invitation years ago and an account was created, or your employer or internet provider gave you an address someone else used before. If you suspect a recycled address, LinkedIn asks you to contact support, and warns that adding it may be delayed or impossible.

Gmail dots. Gmail ignores periods in the first part of an address, so a.b.c@gmail.com and abc@gmail.com reach the same inbox. LinkedIn's page says to type the address without the periods when signing in.

Duplicate accounts. If someone sends an invitation to an address that is not on your account, accepting it can create a second account. The same risk applies if you already have an account with a Gmail address and then click Continue with Google.

Sales Navigator and other licenses. After you confirm a new address, LinkedIn may show a toggle next to it. Turn it on if you need that address to activate a license or reach a product such as Sales Navigator. LinkedIn says this does not trigger a password reset.

Bounced addresses. If LinkedIn's mail to you keeps bouncing, add a working address and remove the bounced one. If the bounced one is your only address, you are in the identity verification route above.

After the change

Changing the address on LinkedIn does not change it anywhere else. Recruiters who have your old address in their own systems will keep using it, and so will any site where you signed in with LinkedIn. Our checklist on changing your email address everywhere covers the order to work through the rest, and how to tell people your email address changed has wording for the announcement. If you are also cleaning up the phone number on your account, see creating a LinkedIn account without a phone number.

This is also a good moment to turn on two-factor authentication. LinkedIn's two-factor overview offers SMS or an authenticator app and recommends the authenticator app.

A new address that needs no phone number

If you are moving to a new address anyway, it can be one that does not ask for a phone. Signing up for Secria Mail takes a name, the address you want and a password: no phone number and no card. The free plan has 1 GB of storage and 2 email aliases. Give LinkedIn its own alias, and if that address ever starts getting spam, you will know where it leaked from and can switch it off by deleting the alias. You can also import your old mail from Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail and others. Create a free account if that fits.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my LinkedIn email without losing my account? Yes. Adding and switching addresses keeps your profile, connections and messages. You are only changing which address signs in and gets notifications.

Can I log in to LinkedIn with my old email after changing it? Yes, as long as it is still on the account and confirmed. LinkedIn lets you sign in with the primary address or any additional address. Once you remove it, it stops working for sign-in.

Why didn't my LinkedIn confirmation email arrive? Check spam or junk first. LinkedIn's verification page says you can select Send verification next to the address on the Email addresses page to get a new one.

What if my work email is the only address on my LinkedIn account? Add a personal address before you leave the job. LinkedIn's help gives this exact case, losing a work address when you change jobs, as the reason to keep a second confirmed address on the account.

Can LinkedIn support change my email for me? If you can sign in, you do it yourself in settings. If you cannot reach any address or phone on the account, LinkedIn's recovery flow lets you enter a new address after verifying your identity with a government ID.

A few minutes in settings now is less work than the ID route later, so do the switch while the old inbox still works.
