Create a TikTok account without a phone number
TikTok does not make you hand over a phone number to join. Its sign-up offers an email route on the web and in the app, and its help center treats email and phone as two interchangeable ways to log in.
Can you create a TikTok account without a phone number?
Yes. On TikTok's sign-up screen, choose "Use phone or email," switch to the email option, and enter an address you can open. TikTok emails a 6-digit code to confirm it. You then add your birthday and a password and pick a username. No phone number is needed at any point.
What follows is checked against TikTok's own help center and its live sign-up page on November 2, 2026. We did not create an account, so where TikTok's pages are silent, we say so.
What TikTok's own pages say
TikTok's Creating an account article is short. It says to download the app, open it, and "choose a sign-up method." The sign-up page at tiktok.com/signup spells out what those methods are: "Use phone or email" with a separate "Sign up for TikTok with your email address" path, plus "Continue with" buttons for other accounts such as Google, Apple and Facebook, depending on where you are.
The same help article sets three rules worth knowing before you start:
- "Make sure your email and phone number are valid as they're needed for log in and password recovery."
- "Each phone number, email address, and social media account can only be linked to one TikTok account."
- "Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) are not supported sign-up methods."
The middle rule matters if you already have a TikTok account. Your existing address cannot be used for a second one. TikTok's email and phone number page says to "use a different email address or change the email address associated with your existing account." It also says an address from a deleted account stays tied up: the account is "deactivated for 30 days and then erased permanently. After 30 days, you can connect that email to a new account."
| Sign-up route | Phone needed? | What confirms it |
|---|---|---|
| No | A 6-digit code sent to the address | |
| Phone | Yes | A 4-digit code by text, or a call |
| Google, Apple, Facebook and others | No phone from TikTok | Sign-in with that other account |
If you searched for a way to join "without a phone number or email," the third row is it: you sign in with an account you already have. That account then becomes your login, and its own rules about phone numbers still apply.
How to sign up for TikTok with an email address
The steps below follow the strings on TikTok's sign-up page. The order of screens can shift a little between the app and the web.
- Open the TikTok app, or go to tiktok.com/signup in a browser. The help center points to the App Store and Google Play, but the web page offers the same email route.
- Choose "Use phone or email." The phone field usually shows first.
- Switch to the Email tab and type an address you can open right now. It has to be one not already linked to another TikTok account.
- Enter your birthday when asked. TikTok's page says to "make sure you enter your real birthday" and that it "won't be shown publicly." Its Terms of Service (last updated July 15, 2026) say that in the US you cannot use the platform if you are under 13, or under 14 in Florida, outside the separate under-13 experience, and that TikTok "will ban your account" if it learns a user is under that age.
- Open your inbox and copy the 6-digit code. The screen then reads "An email with a 6-digit verification code was just sent to" your address.
- Create a password.
- Pick a username. TikTok suggests one. Usernames can be up to 24 characters, cannot contain only numbers and cannot end with a period.
That is the whole account. The Terms also say the information you give "is and will remain complete and accurate," so use a real address you will keep, not a throwaway inbox. TikTok uses it to get you back in when you forget your password.
Why TikTok asks for your phone number
TikTok explains this on its page How your email and phone number are used on TikTok. It says it may use either one to:
- "Help you log in to your TikTok account" and reset your password
- "Strengthen your account security with two-step verification"
- "Connect you with people you may know"
- "Autofill your information when completing a form"
- "Improve the ad experience for you and others." TikTok adds that it "may match your contact information with information we get from Advertising, Measurement, and Data Partners"
- Send "trending content, newsletters, promotions, recommendations, and account updates"
The "people you may know" point is the one most people miss. TikTok says your account may be suggested to others if you have added your phone number, the Contacts setting is on, and the other person has synced a contact book that includes your number. An email-only account sidesteps that particular path.
TikTok still nudges you toward adding a number. The email and phone number page says: "We recommend that you always add a mobile phone number to your account to help you gain access to your account in case you ever lose access to your email." Its page on hacked accounts lists "Link your phone number" as a tip. That is a recommendation, not a requirement.
When TikTok may ask again later
TikTok's help center does not describe a rule that forces a phone number onto an existing email account. What it does describe are a few moments where codes come into play.
Two-step verification. TikTok "strongly recommend[s]" turning on 2-step verification and asks you to pick at least two methods. The options are Phone, Email, Authenticator and Password. So email plus an authenticator app is a complete setup with no phone at all. Find it under Profile, Menu, Settings and privacy, Security & permissions, then 2-step verification.
A new device. With 2-step verification on, TikTok sends a code to your email or authenticator when you log in from a device it does not recognize. Its Reset password page adds that trying to reset your password from "a new or untrusted device" shows an "unrecognized device" error, and the fix is a device you have used before or an account recovery request.
Account recovery. If you lose access to the email you signed up with, TikTok says you'll need to "reset your authentication method" through the Need more help? form, and "this process may take up to 30 days." That is the real cost of an email-only account: keep that inbox safe and you never need this.
Passkeys. TikTok supports passkeys on Android 9 or later and on iOS 16 or later. Once set up under Settings and privacy, Account, Passkey, you log in with your face, fingerprint or device PIN instead of a code. We explain how they work in what is a passkey.
Already added a number? How to remove it
TikTok lets you unlink a phone number, with conditions. From its help page, the steps are: tap Profile, then the Menu button, Settings and privacy, Account, Account Information, Phone number, then Unlink phone and Unlink.
Two rules can block you:
- It cannot be your only login method. TikTok says: "If your account is only linked with a phone number/email, or you only use a password to log in, you cannot unlink due to account security." Add and verify an email first, under the same Account Information screen.
- Phone 2-step verification has to go first. "If your account has phone number/email 2-step verification enabled, please disable it first." Switch 2-step verification to email and an authenticator, then unlink.
On Android there is one more setting to check. TikTok's Link your email on Android devices page says you can choose to link the email address on your Android device to your TikTok account so people can find you, and that it may also be used for ads "depending on other TikTok ad settings." To stop it, turn off Sync contacts under Settings and privacy, Privacy, Sync contacts and Facebook friends. Turning sync off "doesn't remove previously synced emails or contacts," so also tap Remove previously synced contacts.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use TikTok without any account at all?
Partly. TikTok's help page on using TikTok without an account says you can enter a birthdate, agree to the terms and start watching. You can't like, comment, follow or send messages, and TikTok says access is "on a temporary basis" before it prompts you to log in.
Can I make a second TikTok account with the same email?
No. TikTok says each email address can only be linked to one account. Use a different address, or change the email on your current account first. An address from a deleted account becomes free again after 30 days.
Is a phone number needed for TikTok's 2-step verification?
No. TikTok asks you to choose at least two of Phone, Email, Authenticator and Password. Email plus an authenticator app covers it.
How do I log in to TikTok without a phone number?
On the login screen, tap "Use phone / email / username," choose Email / Username, and enter your email or username with your password. If you forget the password, tap Forgot password? and choose to reset it by email.
Can I change the email on my TikTok account later?
Yes. Go to Settings and privacy, Account, Account Information, Email, then Change email. TikTok sends codes to both addresses, so "both the old and the new email address associated with the account must be active and verified."
Start with an email that never needed a phone
An email-only TikTok account is only as private as the email behind it. Many free inboxes ask for a number of their own. We cover Google's version in create a Gmail without a phone number and Microsoft's in create an Outlook account without a phone number.
Secria Mail skips that step. Sign-up is a name, the address you want and a password, with no phone number and no card, and you save a 12-word recovery phrase so you can get back in without a text message. The free plan includes 1 GB of storage and 2 email aliases, so you can give TikTok an alias and keep your main address out of its contact matching.
