The multi-hop VPN with three hops, not two

A multi-hop VPN, sometimes called a double VPN, routes your traffic through more than one server, so no single server knows both who you are and where you are going. Secria VPN builds three-hop circuits on RAM-only servers, with post-quantum WireGuard on every server.

How it works

Three servers, and each one only sees part of the picture

Your traffic passes through an entry, a middle and an exit server. Each one only knows the server before it and the server after it.

What each server in a Secria three-hop circuit can see
QuestionCan seeDoesn’t see
1. Entry serverYour IP address, and that you use Secria VPN.Where your traffic is going.
2. Middle serverOnly the entry and exit servers.Who you are or where you are going.
3. Exit serverThe sites and services you connect to.Who you are. It only knows the middle server.

The circuit is tracked only in server memory, for a short time, and never written to disk. Details are in section 7 of our VPN whitepaper.

Why three hops

Two hops still leave a weak spot

  • With two, each end knows the other

In a two-server chain, the entry server knows the exit, and the exit knows the entry. The Tor Project explains that with two hops, a relay on either end “would know which relay it needs to attack” to identify the user.1

  • Three is where that link breaks

Tor circuits “normally use three relays by design.”1 The middle server keeps the entry and exit from knowing each other, so no single server has a lead on the other end.

  • More than three adds little

Tor says longer paths add load “without (as far as we can tell) providing any more security.”1 Three hops is the sweet spot.

  • Most multi-hop VPNs stop at two

NordVPN’s Double VPN, Surfshark’s MultiHop and IVPN’s multi-hop each route through two VPN servers.234

  2. NordVPN, What is Double VPN? (NordVPN Help Center): “through two VPN servers instead of one.”
  3. Surfshark, What is MultiHop? (Surfshark Help Center): “through two separate VPN servers.”
  4. IVPN, What is a multi-hop VPN service? (IVPN Help): “routed through two VPN servers.” Also notes multi-hop is slightly slower than single-hop.

When to use it

Single hop for every day. Three hops when it counts.

Each extra hop adds distance, so multi-hop is a little slower.4 In Secria VPN it is optional, so you choose.

  • Sensitive research

Looking into something you don’t want tied to your name, from health questions to a story you are reporting.

  • Networks you don’t trust

On hotel, airport or office Wi-Fi, three hops add separation between you and whatever you open.

  • When one server isn’t enough

If you worry about a single server being seized, compromised or watched, a circuit means that server alone can’t connect you to your destination.

Every hop runs the same VPN

Multi-hop on top of the things that matter most

  • Post-quantum on every server

Every server runs WireGuard with an ML-KEM-1024 key added to each session.

  • RAM-only servers

Keys, configs and connection state live in memory and are never written to disk.

  • No activity logs

We do not record browsing, DNS queries or traffic contents. While a session is live we hold the account and device it belongs to, the server in use and the time it started. That record goes when the session ends.

  • Kill switch

An OS-level kill switch blocks all traffic the moment the tunnel drops.

  • Private DNS

Lookups are resolved on our own servers with DNSSEC, never handed to a third-party resolver.

  • Apps for every device

iOS, Android, Windows, macOS and Linux, on up to 5 devices at once.

Questions about multi-hop VPNs

What is a multi-hop VPN?

A multi-hop VPN sends your traffic through two or more VPN servers in a row instead of one. Each server only knows the one before it and the one after it, so no single server sees both who you are and what you connect to. Secria VPN uses three hops.

Is multi-hop the same as double VPN?

Double VPN is a name for multi-hop with two servers. Multi-hop is the general idea, and it can use more servers. Secria’s circuits use three: entry, middle and exit.

Is a double VPN more secure?

It protects you against one VPN server being compromised, coerced or watched, because that server alone can’t link you to your destination. With only two hops, though, each server knows the other, which is why Tor and Secria use three.

Is multi-hop slower?

Yes, a little. Every extra server adds distance. That is why multi-hop in Secria VPN is optional: use a single hop day to day and switch to three hops when you want the extra separation.

Is multi-hop VPN the same as Tor?

Both route through three relays so no single one sees the whole path. Tor runs on volunteer relays and is built around the Tor Browser. Secria VPN runs on our own RAM-only servers and protects every app on your device.

Which Secria plans include multi-hop?

VPN Plus and Secria Pro both include 3-hop circuits, along with the rest of Secria VPN on 5 devices.

No single server sees the whole trip.

Three hops, post-quantum on every server.
