How to delete an iCloud email address: alias, Mail or account

Adrian Maverick · · 9 min read

"Delete my iCloud email" can mean three different things, and Apple handles each one on a different page. Pick the wrong one and you either lose far more than you meant to, or nothing changes at all.

How do you delete an iCloud email address?

If it is an extra alias, go to icloud.com/mail, open Settings, select the alias and choose "Delete alias." If you only want iCloud Mail off a phone or Mac, switch it off in that device's iCloud settings. To get rid of your main @icloud.com address for good, you have to delete your whole Apple Account at Apple's Data and Privacy page.

Those routes come from Apple's iCloud User Guide and its support article How to delete your Apple Account, both checked in October 2026.

Which one do you actually want?

You want to Do this What happens to the address Mail sent to it
Drop an extra address you made later Delete the alias on iCloud.com Gone permanently Returned to the sender
Pause an alias for now Turn off the alias on iCloud.com Can be turned back on Returned to the sender
Stop iCloud Mail on one iPhone or Mac Turn off Mail in that device's iCloud settings Still works everywhere else Still arrives at icloud.com/mail
Retire your main @icloud.com address Delete the Apple Account Gone, along with everything else in the account Not delivered

The last row is the one that surprises people. Apple says you can't rename your primary iCloud Mail address after you create it, and its iCloud guide describes deleting aliases, not the primary address. The documented way to retire the primary address is to delete the Apple Account it belongs to.

How to delete an iCloud Mail alias

An alias is an extra @icloud.com address that delivers into your main inbox. Apple's steps:

  1. Go to icloud.com/mail and sign in to your Apple Account.
  2. Select the settings button at the top of the Mailboxes list, then choose Settings.
  3. Select the alias in the list.
  4. Select "Delete alias," then select Delete.

Before you do it, know Apple's rules for aliases:

  • Deleting is permanent. Apple's page says "Turning off an email alias is temporary; deleting it is permanent."
  • Senders get a bounce. When an alias is turned off or deleted, "email sent to that alias is returned to the sender."
  • There is a wait to replace it. If you are at Apple's alias limit and delete one, you must wait 7 days before you can create a new one.
  • You cannot convert it. Apple's alias overview says aliases can't be changed, transferred, or converted to primary accounts.

Not sure yet? Turn it off instead. In the same settings screen, select the "Disable alias" checkbox and select Save Changes. Deselect it later to bring the alias back.

How to turn off iCloud Mail on an iPhone, iPad or Mac

This removes iCloud Mail from one device. The address keeps working, mail keeps arriving, and you can still read it at icloud.com/mail or on any other device where Mail is on.

Apple's iCloud Mail setup page gives the switch you turn on, so you turn off the same one:

  • iPhone or iPad: go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud, tap Mail, and turn off "Use on this iPhone" (or iPad).
  • Mac: choose Apple menu > System Settings, click your name, click iCloud, click Mail (or iCloud Mail), and turn off Sync this Mac.

Apple notes that if a device has iCloud Mail turned off, you won't be able to send or receive email from your iCloud address on that device. That is the whole effect. Nothing is deleted.

How to delete your Apple Account, and the iCloud address with it

This is the only route that makes your main @icloud.com address stop for good. It also takes everything else. Apple's deletion article says your iCloud photos, videos and documents are permanently deleted, you can't receive messages or calls via iMessage, FaceTime or iCloud Mail, and you lose sign-in to the App Store, Apple Books, Apple Pay, Find My and the rest.

It is also final. Apple says it "can't reopen or reactivate your account or restore your data," and you can't use the same email address or phone number to create a new Apple Account "for several years." If you might come back, Apple suggests temporarily deactivating the account instead, where that option is available.

1. Save your mail first

Apple's own first step is to back up what you keep in iCloud. For mail, our guide on how to export iCloud Mail walks through Apple's three routes: Export Mailbox on a Mac, Apple's data request, or IMAP into another mail app.

2. Move your logins off the address

Every site that uses your @icloud.com address as a login or recovery email will lose its way to reach you. Change those before you delete, starting with your bank, payment apps and password manager. Our post on how to change your email address everywhere has a method for finding them all.

3. Clear Apple's blockers

Apple lists these before you can, or should, delete:

  • Cancel AppleCare. You can't delete the account with an active AppleCare+ plan that isn't paid in full, or an AppleCare One plan.
  • Settle any balance due to Apple. It must be cleared before Apple can delete the account.
  • Spend or refund any credit. An unused balance isn't redeemable or refundable after deletion. You can spend it or ask Apple Support for a refund first.
  • Review subscriptions. Apple Music, iCloud+ and third-party subscriptions billed through your Apple Account are canceled at the end of their billing cycles.
  • Download purchases you don't have copies of, including apps, music, movies and books.

4. Sign out of every device

Apple is blunt about this one. After the account is deleted, you can't sign out of iCloud or turn off Find My Activation Lock, and "you might not be able to use your device." Sign out on every iPhone, iPad and Mac before you send the request.

5. Send the request

  1. Sign in to Apple's Data and Privacy page on a Mac, Windows PC, iPhone, iPad or Apple Vision Pro.
  2. Select "Request to delete your account."
  3. Keep the unique access code Apple gives you somewhere safe.

Apple then verifies that you are the account holder, and after that the account and its data are deleted from Apple's servers.

Can you cancel an Apple Account deletion?

Yes, but only briefly. Apple says that "for a short period of time" while the request is being processed, you can contact Apple Support with your access code and they'll help you cancel. Once the account is deleted, Apple can't cancel the request or restore anything.

What does Apple keep after you delete the account?

Apple says it makes its best effort to delete all personal data, but it keeps past transaction information for financial reporting, may keep information needed for a legal procedure, and keeps a one-way hash of the account's email address as evidence that it carried out the deletion. For accounts on a non-Apple email domain, that hash is deleted after six years.

What happens to your family group?

If you are the family organizer, deleting your account disbands the family group, and members lose access to shared subscriptions and content. Any child accounts in the group are deleted too, unless you transfer them to another family first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I delete my iCloud email without deleting my Apple Account? You can delete an alias, and you can turn off iCloud Mail on any device. Apple's iCloud guide does not describe deleting the primary @icloud.com address on its own, and that address can't be renamed. Retiring it for good means deleting the Apple Account.

Will people who email a deleted iCloud alias get a bounce? Yes. Apple says mail sent to an alias that is turned off or deleted is returned to the sender.

Does removing iCloud from my iPhone Mail app delete the address? No. It only stops iCloud Mail on that device. The address keeps receiving mail, which you can still read at icloud.com/mail.

Can I make a new Apple Account with the same email after deleting? Not for a while. Apple says you can't use the email address or phone number from a deleted account to create a new Apple Account for several years.

Do I lose my iCloud+ subscription when I delete my Apple Account? Apple cancels subscriptions such as iCloud+ at the end of the billing cycle when the account is deleted. AppleCare+ plans not paid in full, and AppleCare One, have to be cancelled before you can delete.

Where your mail goes next

If you are leaving iCloud Mail rather than just tidying it, the next address is worth choosing with care. Secria Mail is free, and signing up asks only for a name, the address you want and a password, with no phone number and no card. Every plan, free included, uses hybrid post-quantum encryption (ML-KEM-1024 with X25519), and your mailbox sits in zero-access storage, locked with a key made from your password, on your device. There are no ads, tracking pixels are removed automatically and senders never see your IP address. You can import your old mail. Create a free account before you start moving your logins, so they have somewhere to land.
