How to change the email on your Google Account, and which one you mean

Adrian Maverick · · 9 min read

Changing the email on your Google Account starts with knowing which email you mean, because a Google Account can hold up to five kinds. Most people searching for this want a new recovery email or contact email, which you can usually change in a minute, while the sign-in address itself can only be changed in some cases.

Google's page on changing your Google Account email and its page on managing your email addresses cover all of them. Everything below comes from those pages and three related ones, checked on November 6, 2026.

Which email do you want to change?

Google lists these on the Email section of your account:

Email What Google uses it for Can you change it?
Google Account email Signing in, and what people see when you share files or send invites Sometimes, see below
Recovery email Getting you back in, security alerts, storage warnings Yes
Contact email Important notices about your account and products like YouTube Yes
Alternate emails Extra non-Gmail addresses you can sign in with Add or remove
About me emails Addresses other people can find on your profile Add, edit or hide

If you want Google's messages to land somewhere else, you probably want the contact or recovery email. If you want to type a different address on the sign-in screen, add an alternate email or change the Google Account email itself.

Before you change it

  • Make sure the new address receives mail. Google sends a verification email for contact and alternate emails, and a recovery email you cannot open is no help when you are locked out.
  • Do it from a device you normally use. Google's recovery options page says that if something looks different about how you are signing in, you might not get the option to change recovery info.
  • Keep the old address working for a week. Google may keep sending codes to your previous recovery info for 7 days after a change, so you can secure the account if someone else made it.
  • Back up first if you are changing the sign-in address. Google recommends a backup and warns that some app settings may reset.

How to change your recovery email

  1. Go to your Google Account at myaccount.google.com.
  2. Click Security & sign-in.
  3. Under How you sign in to Google, click Recovery email. You might need to sign in again.
  4. Click Edit next to the current address, or Delete to remove it.
  5. Follow the steps on the screen.

Google's email settings page also has an Add recovery email link under Personal info, then Email, if you have none yet. Google's advice is to choose an address you use regularly but not the one you sign in with. That way a lockout of one does not take out both.

If Google will not let you change it, the recovery options page suggests trying again from a device you normally sign in on, from a location where you normally sign in, or the following week from the device you are using now. You also cannot add recovery info while you are locked out or in the middle of account recovery.

How to change your contact email

The contact email is where Google writes when there is something important about your account or a product you use. By default that is your Google Account email. It can be an address from any provider, as long as you check it often.

  1. Go to your Google Account and click Personal info.
  2. Click Email.
  3. Under Contact email, click the icon next to it.
  4. Click Add other email and enter the address.
  5. Open the verification email in that inbox and click Verify contact email.

One limit Google states plainly: some Google products still use your Google Account email even after you add a contact email. So this redirects most notices, not all of them.

How to change the main email you sign in with

This is the Google Account email, and what you can do depends on the kind of account you have.

If your account ends in gmail.com

Google says you may be able to switch to a different gmail.com address. Go to myaccount.google.com/google-account-email, open Personal info, then Email, then Google Account email, and look for Change Google Account email. If the option is not there, Google says it might not be possible for your account.

When it works, your old address becomes an alternate, mail to both addresses reaches the same inbox, and your data stays put. There are limits on how often you can do it. We cover the whole process, the limits and what happens to the old address in how to change your Gmail address, so we will not repeat it here.

If your account does not use Gmail

Some Google Accounts were made with an existing address from another provider. Google's email settings page says you can choose a different primary email, through the same path: Personal info, Email, Google Account email, then follow the steps on the screen. Google adds that if you cannot open that setting, you might not be able to change your email or username.

Switching between Gmail and non-Gmail

  • From non-Gmail to Gmail. Add Gmail to the account at mail.google.com and fill out the form. Google's page on adding Gmail says the account's primary username then permanently changes to your new gmail.com address, and the original address becomes an alternate.
  • From Gmail to non-Gmail. Google says you need to delete the Gmail service from the account. That is a big step with its own consequences, covered in how to delete a Gmail account. If you only want to sign in with another address, an alternate email does that without deleting anything.

Work or school accounts

If your Google Account email was set up through your work, school or another group, Google says to contact your administrator. The options above may not appear for you at all.

How to add an alternate email you can sign in with

An alternate email lets you sign in, recover your password and get notifications with a second address. Google's alternate email page sets three rules: it cannot be a Gmail address, it cannot already be linked to another Google Account, and you sign in with it using your Google Account password.

  1. Open your Google Account and click Personal info.
  2. Click Email.
  3. Next to Alternate emails, click Add alternate email. You may need to sign in again.
  4. Enter an address you own and click Add.
  5. Open the verification email Google sends to that address and click the link.

To remove one later, go back to Alternate emails and click Remove next to it. Note that people who share a Doc or send a Calendar invite to your alternate address may still see your Gmail address.

Gotchas after changing the sign-in email

Google has a separate troubleshooting page for problems after a Google Account email change. The ones most likely to catch you:

  • Sign in with Google apps keep the old address. Google keeps giving apps your old username, because some apps identify you by email. Change the email inside the app's own settings first, then sign in with Google again.
  • Payment methods may be removed. Google says the change can unlink cards from Google Pay as a security measure. Add them again if that happens.
  • Some settings reset. Things like your Gmail background, Photos backup or Calendar sync may need setting up again.
  • Many issues fix themselves. Google says a lot of them go away a few hours after the change.

Outside Google, nothing updates on its own. Our checklist on changing your email address everywhere covers the order to work through banks, shops and logins, and how to tell people your email address changed has short templates.

If you are moving to a new address anyway

If the new recovery or contact address is a fresh one, it can be one that asks for no phone number. Signing up for Secria Mail takes a name, the address you want and a password, with no phone number and no card. The free plan comes with 1 GB and 2 aliases. Give each service its own alias: if one starts getting spam, you know where it leaked, and deleting the alias switches it off. You can import old mail from Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail and Thunderbird. Create a free account if that fits.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my Google Account email without creating a new account?

Sometimes. A gmail.com account may be able to switch to another gmail.com address, and Google's settings page says you can choose a different primary email. If the Change Google Account email option is missing, Google says it might not be possible for your account. Recovery and contact emails can usually be changed at any point.

Does changing my recovery email change how I sign in?

No. The recovery email is for getting back in and for alerts. You still sign in with your Google Account email, or with an alternate email if you added one.

Will I lose my emails or files if I change my Google Account email?

Google says the data in your account is not affected when you change from one gmail.com address to another. It still recommends a backup first, because some app settings may reset.

Why can't I change my recovery email?

Google may hide the option if something about your sign-in looks unusual. Try from a device and location you normally use, or wait a week and try again from your current device.

Can my recovery email be the same as my Google Account email?

Google advises against it. Its recovery page says to choose an address you use regularly but not the one you use to sign in.

Pick which email you actually need to change, and keep the old inbox open for the 7 days Google may still send codes to it.
