Does a VPN affect ping? When it adds lag and when it can help

Adrian Maverick · · 7 min read

Usually, a VPN adds a little to your ping, because your game traffic takes a detour through the VPN server before it reaches the game server. Sometimes it can lower ping, but only when your internet provider's normal route to the game is worse than the detour, and a VPN can never beat the physical distance between you and the game server.

How much it adds depends mostly on where the VPN server sits. Here is how it works and how to measure it on your own connection.

What ping actually measures

Ping is round-trip time: how long a small packet takes to get from your device to a server and back, in milliseconds. Microsoft's documentation for the ping command describes it as sending echo requests and displaying the replies "along with round-trip times." The ping number in a game's overlay is the same idea, measured to the game server.

Lower is better. In a shooter or fighting game, the difference between a smooth match and a frustrating one can be a few dozen milliseconds.

Why a VPN usually adds ping

Without a VPN, your traffic goes from you to the game server along whatever route your provider picks. With a VPN, it goes from you to the VPN server, and from there to the game server. Your ping becomes the sum of two legs:

You to the VPN server, plus the VPN server to the game server.

Distance is the biggest part of each leg. Microsoft publishes median round-trip times between its Azure data centers, and calls out gaming as one of the uses where latency matters. From its dataset dated July 30, 2026:

Route Median round trip
West Europe to UK South 11 ms
West Europe to North Europe 17 ms
East US to West US 69 ms
East US to West Europe 83 ms
East US to Japan East 162 ms

Those numbers are between big data centers on a private backbone, so a home connection will usually be slower. The point is the shape: a server in a nearby country costs you a handful of milliseconds, while a server across an ocean can cost you more than many games can hide.

The other causes are smaller:

  • Encryption. Your device and the server encrypt and decrypt every packet. On a modern phone or computer this is a small cost next to distance.
  • The extra stop. Each packet is handled by one more machine. If that server is busy, packets wait in line.
  • Packet size. A VPN wraps each packet in another one, which adds a few dozen bytes. Our post on whether a VPN slows down your internet breaks that down.

When a VPN can lower your ping

The triangle rule above has one exception. Your provider does not always send traffic down the shortest path. Routes between networks are set by business deals as much as geography, and sometimes the direct route to a game server goes the long way round.

If the VPN provider's network has a better path to the game, the two legs together can come out shorter than the direct route. When that happens, ping drops. It is not common, it varies by provider, game and time of day, and you cannot predict it. You can only measure it.

What a VPN cannot do:

  • Make a game server closer than it is.
  • Fix a weak Wi-Fi signal between you and your router.
  • Fix lag that is not network lag at all.

Is it really ping? Three kinds of lag

Roblox's help page on reducing lag splits lag into three types, and the split applies to most games:

  • Network lag. Other players warp around and actions take too long to register. This is the only kind a VPN touches.
  • Graphics lag. Choppy, stuttering visuals because the device is struggling. Roblox suggests lowering the graphics level: press Esc, go to Settings, turn off Graphics Quality Auto, then lower it.
  • System lag. Other apps using up the device. Close what you do not need.

If your frame rate is the problem, a VPN will not help and may add a little network delay on top.

How to check what a VPN does to your ping

Measure it instead of guessing. You need the VPN app and a terminal.

  1. Pick a target. Use the game server's address if the game shows it, or a server in the same region as your matches.
  2. Ping with the VPN off. On Windows, run ping -n 20 <address>. On Mac or Linux, run ping -c 20 <address>. Note the average and whether any packets were lost.
  3. Connect the VPN to the server nearest you and run the same command.
  4. Try a VPN server near the game server and run it again.
  5. Compare. Look at the average, how much the times jump around (jitter), and packet loss. A steady 40 ms plays better than a ping that swings between 20 and 90.
  6. See the path. Microsoft's tracert (traceroute on Mac and Linux) lists each hop on the way. A big jump between two hops shows where the time goes. Some routers do not answer and show as a row of asterisks, which is normal.

Some servers do not reply to ping at all. If that happens, the in-game ping display with the VPN off and on is your next best comparison. Run each a few times, at the same time of day.

Things to know before gaming on a VPN

  • Your region can change. Games and platforms can place you by IP address. Roblox's account location page says it detects your region from device signals including your IP address, and that a VPN may affect the accuracy. A server in another country can mean matches in another region, with higher ping.
  • Read the game's terms. Rules about VPNs vary by publisher. Check before you play on one.
  • Try a different connection first. Roblox's own troubleshooting for high ping and lag is to try a different internet connection, and if the problem stays, contact your provider.

Frequently asked questions

Does a VPN reduce ping in games?

Sometimes, but not usually. It only helps when your provider's route to the game server is poor and the VPN's route is better. In most cases a nearby VPN server adds a few milliseconds and a far one adds a lot.

Does a VPN affect Roblox ping?

The same rules apply. Roblox also uses your IP address to work out your region, and says a VPN may affect that, so a far server can put you somewhere you did not mean to be.

Why is my ping so high with a VPN?

Most likely the VPN server is far from you or from the game server, or it is busy. Switch to the server nearest you and measure again.

Does a VPN cause packet loss?

It can if the connection to the VPN server is unstable or the server is overloaded. Run the ping test with the VPN off and on. If loss appears only with the VPN, try another server.

Does a VPN increase latency on Wi-Fi?

By the same amount as on a cable. The VPN adds the detour, and Wi-Fi adds its own delay on the way to your router. A VPN does nothing about a weak signal.

Will a VPN help with lag on a slow device?

No. Graphics and system lag happen on your device, not on the network.
