Why people leave Outlook.com
Free Outlook.com is ad-supported, and the keys stay with Microsoft
Taken from Microsoft’s own help pages and privacy statement. Every point links to its source.
Hotmail is Outlook.com now
If you still have an @hotmail.com address, it lives on Outlook.com. Microsoft rebranded the service, so everything below applies to Hotmail accounts too.1
Ads unless you subscribe
Microsoft gives an ad-free Outlook.com mailbox to Microsoft 365 subscribers. On a free account, the ads stay.2
Encryption is a paid extra
Outlook’s message encryption comes with a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription, and encrypted messages stay inside Microsoft 365.3
Microsoft can open your mailbox
Microsoft’s privacy statement says it may access and disclose your content, “like the content of your emails in Outlook.com,” when it believes that is necessary, using automated and manual methods.4

Questions about leaving Outlook.com and Hotmail
Is Hotmail the same as Outlook?
Yes. Microsoft says Hotmail is now Outlook.com, and @hotmail.com addresses still sign in there. Anything this page says about Outlook.com applies to your Hotmail account too.
What is the most private alternative to Outlook.com?
Look for a mailbox where your stored mail is sealed with your own keys, encryption is on for everyone without a subscription, and there are no ads. Secria Mail does all three on every plan, free included, with post-quantum encryption on top.
Does Microsoft read my Outlook emails?
Microsoft says it does not use the content of your email to target ads. Its privacy statement also says it may access and disclose your content, including Outlook.com email, when it believes that is necessary, and that its processing uses both automated and manual methods.
How do I get rid of ads in Outlook.com?
Microsoft removes ads from Outlook.com for Microsoft 365 subscribers. Secria Mail has no ads on any plan, including the free one.
Can I move my Hotmail emails to Secria?
Yes. Secria imports Outlook PST files, MBOX files and EML files on every plan, free included. MBOX and EML files are read in your browser and never reach our servers.
Is Secria free?
Yes. The free plan gives you 1 GB, 2 aliases, 3 folders, mail import and the same encryption as every paid plan. No card and no phone number.
