Is RCS encrypted? iPhone, Android and carriers in 2026

Adrian Maverick · · 8 min read

RCS is the texting standard that replaced SMS in the default messaging apps on Android and, since iOS 18, on iPhone. Whether a given RCS chat is private depends on three things: the apps on both ends, the carriers on both ends, and whether a small lock icon is showing. Here is how to read that icon, as of October 2026.

Is RCS encrypted?

RCS is always encrypted in transit, but it is end-to-end encrypted only in some chats. Between two Google Messages users, chats are end-to-end encrypted by default. Between iPhone and Android, end-to-end encryption has been rolling out in beta since May 2026 and depends on both carriers. Look for the lock icon.

That distinction is the whole answer, so it is worth unpacking.

Encrypted in transit vs end to end

"In transit" means the message is encrypted on the way to the company running the RCS service, and decrypted there. Google says its RCS service "uses Transport Layer Security (TLS) encryption to protect your messages even when end-to-end encryption is not available," so someone snooping on your Wi-Fi sees scrambled text. Google or the carrier handling the message can still read it.

End to end means the message is locked on your phone and opened only on the recipient's. The servers in between carry it without a key. Apple's wording is blunt: if you do not see the encrypted indicator, "your RCS messages aren't protected from a third-party reading them while they're sent between devices."

So "is RCS encrypted in transit" is always yes. "Is RCS end-to-end encrypted" is the question that matters, and the answer varies by chat.

Is RCS end-to-end encrypted between Android and iPhone?

Yes, when the conversation shows the lock. On May 11, 2026, Apple and Google began rolling out end-to-end encrypted RCS for iPhones on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers and Android phones on the latest Google Messages. Both companies say encryption is on by default and is switched on "over time" for new and existing chats. Nothing needs to be toggled.

The cross-platform version uses Messaging Layer Security (MLS), an IETF standard that the GSMA, the mobile industry's standards body, wrote into RCS Universal Profile 3.0 in March 2025. In July 2026 the GSMA published Universal Profile 4.1, which refines the encryption specifications using lessons from interoperability testing between different clients.

As of October 22, 2026, Apple's support page still labels the feature "end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging (Beta)." The catch is the carrier requirement. Apple says encryption works "when all participants have carriers that support encryption," so in a group chat one unsupported carrier leaves the whole group unencrypted.

Which carriers support encrypted RCS on iPhone?

Apple lists "End-to-end encrypted RCS messaging (beta)" carrier by carrier on its regional support pages. Counting those entries on October 22, 2026:

Region (Apple page date) Carriers listed with encrypted RCS Notes
United States (Sept 15, 2026) 23 AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and most of their prepaid brands. Google Fi is not on the US list at all
Canada (same page) 12 Bell, Rogers and Telus and their brands, plus Freedom, SaskTel, Videotron
Europe (Sept 15, 2026) 18 UK: Three, BT and EE, but not Vodafone, O2, giffgaff, Sky or Tesco Mobile. Germany: Telekom, O2, 1&1
Asia-Pacific (Sept 14, 2026) 3 Japan: au and SoftBank, not NTT DOCOMO. Singapore: Singtel
Latin America (May 11, 2026) 2 Brazil: TIM and Vivo
Africa, Middle East and India 0 No carrier listed

If your carrier, or the other person's, is missing, an iPhone-to-Android RCS chat still works, just without the lock. Lists change, so check your own carrier's entry on Apple's page before relying on it.

Is RCS encrypted on Android?

Between Google Messages users, yes, and it has been for years. Google's help page says RCS chats "between Google Messages users are automatically upgraded to end-to-end encryption", for "both 1:1 chats and groups when all conversation participants use Google Messages with RCS chats turned on." Google's technical paper (version 1.2, February 2022) describes that system as built on the Signal Protocol. Android-to-Android encryption does not wait on carriers adding support. It needs Google Messages on both phones, RCS chats turned on, and a data or Wi-Fi connection.

Google's page adds one important line: "Currently only Google Messages supports end-to-end encrypted RCS." RCS sent from another messaging app is not end-to-end encrypted.

That matters less than it used to. Samsung discontinued Samsung Messages in July 2026 and tells Galaxy owners to switch to Google Messages, so Galaxy owners are being moved to the one app that supports it. If you still use a carrier's or manufacturer's own texting app, your RCS chats are protected in transit only.

When an encrypted RCS chat stops being encrypted

The lock can disappear without warning. Google lists the cases:

  • Either person loses mobile data and Wi-Fi. Encrypted RCS needs a data connection, and the chat can fall back to SMS.
  • Either person turns off RCS chats, switches to a new phone or changes operating system.
  • On iPhone, either person's carrier does not support encryption.

SMS and MMS are never end-to-end encrypted. When encryption is unavailable, Google Messages lets you send the message as SMS or wait until RCS is back. Our guide to whether text messages are private covers what carriers can read and keep from SMS.

What encrypted RCS does not hide

End-to-end encryption protects the words, photos and files. It does not hide the envelope.

  • Your phone number and device. Apple says RCS setup exchanges your phone number and, depending on the carrier, your IP address with "your carrier and their partners." Google says it uses your phone number, device identifiers and SIM card number, and may store that data "for about a month."
  • Who you message and when. The RCS provider has to route each message, so it sees the pattern. The EFF noted in its launch write-up that metadata "will likely still be collected and stored."
  • Your backups. On Android, Google says encrypted messages received on your phone are included in Android backup, and that some backup data is end-to-end encrypted with your screen lock. On iPhone, RCS messages live in Messages alongside iMessage, so the iCloud settings in our iMessage encryption guide apply.
  • Anyone holding your unlocked phone. Every message is readable on the device.

Check whether your RCS chats are encrypted

On iPhone (iOS 26.5 or later)

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Messages and make sure RCS Messaging is on.
  2. Open a chat with an Android user. A lock with the word "Encrypted" at the top means the chat is end-to-end encrypted.
  3. No lock means the chat is RCS protected in transit only, or plain SMS. Check Apple's carrier page for both carriers.

On Android (Google Messages)

  1. Update Google Messages, and Carrier Services if your phone has it.
  2. In Messages settings, confirm RCS chats are turned on.
  3. Open the chat and start typing. A lock on the send button and next to the timestamps means end-to-end encryption is active.
  4. For a contact you need to be sure about, open the chat menu and choose Verify encryption, then compare the code with them in person or on a call. Phones with Android 10 or later can also use Google's Key Verifier app.

Check again after either of you changes phones. A new device means new keys.

The same lock question for email

RCS teaches a simple rule: encrypted in transit is not the same as unreadable by the company in the middle. Email has the same split, and most inboxes are stored where the provider can read them. Secria Mail stores every message in your mailbox under zero-access encryption, with hybrid post-quantum encryption (ML-KEM-1024 with X25519) on every plan, the free one included.

Frequently asked questions

Is RCS more secure than SMS?

Yes. RCS is always encrypted in transit, while SMS is not encrypted at all. End-to-end encrypted RCS goes further, so that neither Google nor the carriers can read the message.

Is RCS encrypted like iMessage?

An RCS chat with the lock is end-to-end encrypted, as iMessage is. iMessage needs no carrier support and works between Apple devices automatically. Encrypted RCS between iPhone and Android depends on the apps, the carriers and a data connection, and Apple still calls it beta.

Can Google read my RCS messages?

Not in end-to-end encrypted chats. In RCS chats without the lock, messages pass through Google's or the carrier's RCS servers protected by TLS, and the service operator can access them while delivering.

Are RCS group chats encrypted?

Between Google Messages users, yes, when everyone has RCS chats on. Between iPhone and Android, only when every participant's carrier supports encryption. One unsupported member means the group is not end-to-end encrypted.

Why does my RCS chat say it's not encrypted?

Usually because one side's carrier is not on Apple's list, someone uses a messaging app other than Google Messages, or the phone has fallen back to SMS because of a weak data connection. Update both apps and check again.

RCS can be as private as any messenger now, but only when the lock is there. Check the chats that matter today, and give your inbox the same look.
